“Summer will end soon enough, and childhood as well.” ― George R.R. Martin, A Game of Thrones
Summer has already come and gone! Not really, but given the weather it feels like that; mostly cool rainy days, briefly interrupted with three days of absurd heat, then back to cool and rain. We were sure to enjoy the three days.
This newsletter is only a couple of weeks late. With all the things going on around us, from end of the school year and field trips, to markets and meals, I’ve had very little time at my window desk to write. Yes, I’ve been slowly pushing out my substacks about Germany and trying to do more in Notes, but the mind and body need time to digest things before they can show something for their labors.
I’d love to say that now that it’s summer there will be time, but experience has told me, that isn’t always the case. There are so many words I need and want to get out, and I hope they don’t have to stay there until “there’s time”, because the truth of the matter is that there is never enough time.

Quick Bits 💌 #016
School is officially out for summer for us! With the 26th of June being the last day. The public school year is interminable in New York state and our governor doesn’t help, with the additions of new holidays all the time, but never a reduction in the number of days school is required to be in session (180 days). I am convinced the ultimate goal is to keep children in school all year, with a few weeks off in the summer. We’re well on our way to that now!
I’d like to introduce you to the newest members of our family: Pippa, Meatball, Boo, and Rilla. I’ve never had ducks before in my life, and have never had animals (beside cats and dogs - and that suicidal hamster when I was 10) that were a pet and not being raised for food.
At the beginning of June our church participated in a Historic Church Tour in our little town. While we are the oldest church in our village (1831); we are, most likely, the most empty as well. It was good to see the pews filled, even if only for 15 minutes.
