Quick Bits 🍹#017
“I drifted into a summer nap under the hot shade of July, serenaded by a cicada lullaby, to drowsy-warm dreams of distant thunder.” —Terri Guillemets
It is the end of July. For many years my birthday (July 21) marked the end of Summer for our family. We owned a concession business at our county fair in mid-August and all of our time was sucked up with that.
I am constantly having to relearn a great many things, particularly enjoying the varying tempo and hazy days of the end of July and August. A free moment here and there is often looked at with a questioning mind: Did I forget something? What am I supposed to be doing?
I’ve spent a few tenative moments here and there looking forward at what the coming school year holds for us (changes, as always). But for now, school doesn’t start for us until September 4, and it is indeed still Summer!

These ducks! They’ve grown exponentially and the learning curve has been steep! Our pekin, Rilla, developed a limp, then wouldn’t walk, and then couldn’t lift her right wing. Having raised chickens my whole life, and particularly meat chickens, I chalked it up to her getting too big, too fast. While I think that is still part of it we also learned that Pekin ducks are notoriously niacin deficient. We’ve been loading her with niacin and it seems to be helping. As silly as it is, if you can spare a prayer for our Rilla it would be much appreciated.
July was the month of running for us. For two weeks straight we were running between soccer camp, theater camp, and boy scout camp, followed by a week of appointments in preparation for school. While I love the opportunities and lessons camps can and do provide my children, I could not wait for the running to be over!
This past Monday I celebrated my 43rd birthday. Life is interesting and rarely goes according to plan. I love celebrating birthdays, while also feeling a little weirded out at the number associated with me. Particularly since I can distinctly remember my mom at the age I am now. Does anyone else experience this?

“I think this was wise; the greatest service we can do to education today is to teach fewer subjects. No one has time to do more than a very few things well before he is twenty, and when we force a boy to be a mediocrity in a dozen subjects we destroy his standards, perhaps for life.” CS Lewis - Surprised by Joy
